Topher Browne To Speak At United Fly Tyers

The United Fly Tyers will be offering a multi-media presentation by Mr. Topher Browne, atlantic salmon fly tyer and author of the new, highly acclaimed book, Atlantic Salmon Magic, at their meeting at 7 pm on January 5th, 2012, in the Student Union of the Middlesex Community College just off of Rt. 128 and Rt. 3 in Bedford, MA. The public is invited and this should be a very entertaining evening for all.

Topher will be demonstrating the tying of his special tube flies for Atlantic salmon prior to his audio-visual presentation. He will also personally autograph copies of his book and have them available for sale. As usual, the United Fly Tyers will offer free fly tying lessons to anyone interested in learning the art as well.

Mr. Browne was formerly an Atlantic salmon fishing guide for a number of summers Quebec's Gaspe peninsula and is a spey casting instructor and author of a book on spey casting as well.

Rhode Island Bans Felt Soles

Effective January 1, 2012 Rhode Island has banned the use of felt soles in both fresh and salt water. The ban has been implemented administratively as part of the 2012 fishing regulations. It seems that this ban was developed without public notice.

The new rule states, "It is prohibited that any person use foot gear with external felt soles in any state waters, inclusive of freshwater, tidal or marine. This shall include any waters shared by adjacent states in which Rhode Island Fishing Regulations apply." The rule is found in the 2012/2013 Rhode Island Fishing Regulations . It is regulation 1.17.

I picked one of these up over the winter and have been using it this spring. It's a great pack for the kayak angler. Equally nice for wading. It's very roomy, adjustable and has inner pockets. Also, it is much more comfortable that a chest pack. Never could see the appeal of the chest pack...too much line tangling. The Dry Creek just twists around my waist, out of the way, when not in use.

OK, don't get me started on the states that are banning felt-soled wading boots. Too long a discussion. I, however, will be in full compliance with the new regulations. For short money I had my nice (long dollar), broken-in boots resoled with Vibram lug soles. The boots works great. Stomping with joy. Go to a shoe repair place. They will sand off the felt and install the new sole. End of story. Sorry not to be adding to the pockets of the boot manufacturers. You thieves know who you are.

This photo was sent to me by Frank Johnson, famous Big Horn River Guide, showing the snow-pack in the mountains. The snow-fall was 250% of average. There has been lots of low-land flooding due to heavy rains of 7"-10" in just a few days. This is an area which gets 14"-15" annual rainfall.Frank says, "The Big Horn is running at 14,000 cfs, which is the highest it has been since the dam was built in 1968. The flows will increase over the next couple of weeks. We are very concerned about more serious flooding and damage." Hang on. It'll be a wild ride in the Hyde.

OK, so there is didymo in the Farmington River. CT harvests fish for breeding stock from the Farmington River.These fish are transported from the river to the hatchery. Sounds to me like this also brings rock snot to the hatchery. Or are the breeding stock given a bath first? Ha. What about the contamination of the equipment and trucks used to the chauffeur stocking fish around the state? I am no expert, but where do my felt soles factor in here? Oh, and by the way, I have yet to see one bird-washing station. How do water foul and other animals decontaminate before traipsing from one body of water to the other?

Billy Pate Dies

Billy Pate the legendary salt water angler has died at the age of 80. He died of Alzheimer's disease. Pate, at one time, held the world record for the largest tarpon caught on fly rod . It was a 188-pounder on 16-pound tippet in 1982. He also was the first angler to catch all six of the world’s bill-fish species on fly rod.

Edwin Rist Sentenced

American bird-skin-thief, Edwin Rist, has been sentenced. The hammer fell and it is a 12-month suspended sentence. Too bad it wasn't a British gaol.

As you may recall, young Edwin was arrested on November 12, 2010, accused of stealing several hundred rare bird skins from a British museum. He peddled the skins and feathers to gain money to put towards his studies and to buy a new flute. "One time, at band camp..."

He separated many of the bird skins, or feathers from them, and sold them on to other fly-tiers. A fly-tier alerted the police after he saw the media appeals and became suspicious when he was offered the skins for sale. Following the arrest and charge, a number of people around the world came forward with specimens they had unwittingly purchased from Rist and wanted to return. So far, 191 intact birds have been recovered, but only 101 still retain their labels, which are critical scientifically. Parts, such as feathers, have also been recovered from an estimated 31 further birds.

Delaware River Designated As A National Great River

The Delaware River has been designated a “Great Water,” joining 18 other waterways nationwide selected for that honor by a national coalition formed to protect waterways of high economic, social and environmental importance.

The America’s Great Waters Coalition, based in Washington, D.C., announced its 2011 selections last week. The coalition was formed in 2009 to advocate for the restoration and protection of lakes, bays, rivers and marshes that are rich in natural resources and have a significant impact on their surrounding regions.

The Delaware River is the longest un-dammed river east of the Mississippi, flowing for 330 miles from Hancock, N.Y. to the Delaware Bay, where it empties into the Atlantic Ocean. More than 15 million people in four states depend on the river’s water for drinking, agricultural and industrial use. The Delaware includes natural wonders -- three stretches along its course are included in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers program – and important commercial assets.

Besides the Delaware, eight other Great Waters were named by the Coalition on March 22, World Water Day. They are: the New York/New Jersey Harbor, Albemarle Pamlico Sound, Colorado River, Galveston Bay, Missouri River, Narragansett Bay, Ohio River and the Rio Grande.
