Topher Browne To Speak At United Fly Tyers

The United Fly Tyers will be offering a multi-media presentation by Mr. Topher Browne, atlantic salmon fly tyer and author of the new, highly acclaimed book, Atlantic Salmon Magic, at their meeting at 7 pm on January 5th, 2012, in the Student Union of the Middlesex Community College just off of Rt. 128 and Rt. 3 in Bedford, MA.   The public is invited and this should be a very entertaining evening for all.

Topher will be demonstrating the tying of his special tube flies for Atlantic salmon prior to his audio-visual presentation.  He will also personally autograph copies of his book and have them available for sale.  As usual, the United Fly Tyers will offer free fly tying lessons to anyone interested in learning the art as well.

Mr. Browne was formerly an Atlantic salmon fishing guide for a number of summers Quebec's Gaspe peninsula and is a spey casting instructor and author of a book on spey casting as well.

Directions and a map to the meeting location are posted on the United Fly Tyers internet web site at www.unitedflytyers.org .

Rhode Island Bans Felt Soles

Effective January 1, 2012 Rhode Island has banned the use of felt soles in both fresh and salt water. The ban has been implemented administratively as part of the 2012 fishing regulations. It seems that this ban was developed without public notice.

The new rule states, "It is prohibited that any person use foot gear with external felt soles in any state waters, inclusive of freshwater, tidal or marine. This shall include any waters shared by adjacent states in which Rhode Island Fishing Regulations apply." The rule is found in the 2012/2013 Rhode Island Fishing Regulations . It is regulation 1.17.

Tach-It Fly & Hook Holder

This is a very helpful item. Use it to keep hooks and flies organized and up and off the flat surfaces of my tying desk. No more digging through heaps of materials to find the hooks that I am using. Also have one for travel to stop hooks and flies from disappearing into hotel room carpet.

Something For The Fall Brookies

Been messing with this pattern to entice some fall trout with streamers. So far it's going well. Like the sparser hackle for better activity in the water.

MATCHING MAJOR EASTERN HATCHES

Matching Major Eastern Hatches: New Patterns for Selective Trout (Headwater Books, 2011) by Henry Ramsay is a must read for anglers and tyers who ply their craft on Eastern waters.  In this treasure you will find loads and loads of highly useful patterns.  Tying instructions are clear and well-illustrated with superb photographs. There are awesome, detailed and very captivating pictures of the naturals as well. I had some time at the recent Arts of The Angler in Danbury, CT to chat with Henry and let me tell you he is the real deal with great knowledge. His clear thinking is reflected in his writing. And he's a good guy to boot. Check out his website: www.ramsayflies.com. Read more and get Henry's book at www.bearsden.com/product10475.html.

Custom Tyed Flies

Just a little plug for my on line fly shop. You need flies? I tye 'em for you. This is not a pick and pack shop with a huge inventory of flies from overseas. I tye when you order, using your specifications. For example, if you want specialty hooks...you got 'em...Mustad, Gamakatsu, Knapek, Grip, Tiemco, Hanek, Dohiku, etc.
