United Fly Tyers

FYI. The United Fly Tyers 50th Anniversary Gala dinner was a fun time. We heard from Jim Krul of the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum. Several folks from UFT of olde spoke. If you snooze, you loose...you missed cool prizes and thought-provoking speakers. See you in another 50 years.

Rumor has it that former Fly Fishing Team USA guru, Jack Dennis, is retiring from much of his active work in the fly fishing industry. He will be around and about, but is easing back considerably.

Bee Eating A Pork Chop

Last March in Chile, while on our great South American Trout Expedition, my friend Mike and I were fascinated by the bees that would come in and cut out a chunk of meat to take away. They would land and cut out a hole-punch-size piece of meat, tuck it up under the thorax and abdomen and lift off like a heavily-laden helicopter. This occurred every day during our shore lunch. So cool.

Bridge Over The River Willimantic

Check this out. There is a bridge that spans a tributary that feeds into the Willimantic River in CT (rest stop off of I84). High Water makes the bridge a necessity, but has also, at times, pushed the bridge down stream to the I84 abutment. Well, the CFFA folks go and retrieve the bridge, float it back up stream and reinstall. That is what is happening in this small photo sequence. That's Charlie Place demonstrating the correct use and positioning of the bridge.

Roadkill Capital

In my recent travels I have observed that Missouri seems to be the roadkill capital of the US. There were vast numbers of all manner of animals...too numerous to mention. I realize that there are several other states vying for this title. Louisiana and Tennessee are among the leaders in this category as well. (No, I did not pick up any flattened critters.)
